So looking for a pair of XRs for the wifey and myself - bikes I can register in NH and we can hit some back roads and class VI roads on this fall. I think I’ve got a bike picked out for her (XR200 or 250) but looking around for myself I’d like something with more displacement - thinking 400/500/600ish - and I really like the ‘80s versions, so I’ve been looking around. My question is what year XRs should be avoided? IIRC the bikes with dual carbs? I really don’t know a lot about them, but I’m sure some folks here do !

Thank you

Steve

1986 & 87 XR600’s have a weak 3rd gear. Ask me how I know…

That's a great article!
I really liked my mid 90's XR400R. Regret selling that one.
Also, liked my late 80's XR250. The twin carb deal was tricky though and sitting the cam directly into an aluminum bearing in the head was a big Honda mistake. :omg:
My xr250 sounded like an industrial sewing machine due to oil starvation / lack of maintenance.
Valves are STILL for toilets!

I'd say the XR600 from '91 up is where you should be looking.

Thanks for posting Todd - although I had hoped for something with a bit more displacement for myself, as I’d like some excursions that may extend beyond the local trails. Still any deals that pop up get scarfed quickly.

I really want this thing, but it’s too pricey for what I’m willing to spend & I also need to avoid the ‘85s

$5,395? For a 35 year old XR? Hard pass.
